iPhone 2.1: Hints for a new iPhone!
In the newly released firmware version 2.2.1 McRumors apparently discovered a reference to a possible next generation iPhone. In the source code of the iPhone software they found a line of code where an iPhone 2,1 is mentioned.
Apple assigns unique numbers in the code for the various iPhone models. The first iPhone has been named iPhone 1,1, while the iPhone 3Gs name was 1,2. The now emerged new ID is a hint for a whole new iPhone generation, ’cause of the huge jump from 1,2 to 2,1 one could expect significant changes to the current 3G model.
When the iPod touch jumped in the version number there were many new features also including speakers, volume control, a microphone and a much faster processor. A few weeks ago, there was already a rumor that the new iPhone could get a quad-processor with graphics performance that would even outnumber PSP and Nintendo DS.
The fact that some prototypes of the new iPhones are already in use is now claimed by the company pinchmedia, which responded immediately to McRumors blogpost. The manufacturer of the tracking software Pinch Analytics (with this software iPhone developers can track how often their programs are downloaded and how long they are used) reported on his website that already in October 2008 an iPhone with the identifier 2,1 appeared in the data of some iPhone Developer. Since then, the number of clearly identifiable devices increased to several dozen. In addition, stored Geo-Data shows that these devices all appeared in the south San Francisco Bay Area, where the headquarters of Apple are located.
